D&D and the Business of Gaming

Gamespy has a whole series of articles on the history of Dungeons and Dragons and TSR (the company that used to make D&D before Wizards of the Coast bought them.) It's fairly interesting to see the story behind a company that has an extremely powerful brand but no real idea what to do with it. I think it's interesting to note that the pains that TSR went through before being bought by wizards of the coast and becoming a real business is similar to what Game Workshop is going through right now. Namely, making a lot of weirdo business decisions because the people at the top aren't real business people.

In other news, the home health care worker is visiting with Dad today. So far He seems to like having someone here.

He might like her even more if she looked like 'Hello Nurse' from Animaniacs. Im just sayin'...

If only all nurses looked like that.

Unfortunately, they usually seem to weigh about 400 pounds, which is terribly ironic for a health-care worker.

*note that this is a gross generalization and is not meant to protray all nurses, past or present*

My friend in Buffalo, NY is married to a nurse. He often asks [he drinks]

Q. 'why does nursing school take four years?'

A. 'because if they sucked all the brains out their heads any faster, their heads would implode.'

I'm sure we could all come up with some suitable substitute for 'nurse' in that question, and perhaps a substitute for 'four' years as well.

Maybe we could change it to 'why is a presidential term four years long?' or, well, you get the picture.

Fabulous prizes for best submission!

I just noticed some console is coming out w/ a 40K game. Wonder if it'll be any good. Are there already some in existence?

There aren't any 40k console games right now, there are a few older pc games. None of them are really based on the 40k rules though they are just games using the licenses. One of them was called Chaos Gate and it was pretty bad, There was one based on the Epic game system that wasn't too bad but the graphics were terrible.

Lone Star Comics is having a party tonight to celebrate the rollout of a new version of Vampire. They seemed very eager to get fresh blood in to the party. So to speak.

There's a 40K PC RTS game coming out soon... and I can't remember the name of it. I've played the beta, though, and it's actually pretty damned cool.

Rites of War. There's a Beta? IT MUST BE MINE.

Reading

I just finshed Codelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold which is the first book of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Very good book, but the Sci-Fi bits are really secondary to the story.

Right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet Series by John Hemry/Jack Campbell It's sorta Honor Harrington but not really, though Honor Harrington even goes downhill in the later novels.
