Your Wireless Network is Not Secure

Okay so I'm still pretty busy, but If i don't post today then I probably won't until sometime next week. I've been working on my research paper for school and since I'm writing about a topic that I know a lot about, wireless networking, I'm actually having the opposite problem that I did in college, it's going to be too long. The limit is 10 pages and my intro is already 3 pages long. I guess I'll have to cut down on explaning stuff and just refer to other documents for explanation. Oh and just as a point of information, you can't fuly secure a wireless network. Especially not ones built with stuff from Best Buy. You can make it a pain to break into though. My suggestion for your home networks. Enable your 140 bit wep key. That will at least prevent your neighbors kid from surfing porn on your connection and an actual hacker will have to WORK at it to break into your network.

I tried all of this with someone else who broke into my wireless router. I don't understand it. It doesn't matter b/c my wireless network will now no longer be necessary. Buh-bye!

When I lived at my dad's house I caught a wireless connection called "Linksys" which is what the Linksys wireless routers call themselves by default. I then did the whole 192.168.1.1 deal and logged in with the default password witch was "admin" (remember this kiddies). I then changed thier whole configuration, cleared thier routing table and got out. It felt somewhat guilty at the time but i really wanted to teach them a lesson.

They sell wireless adapters out there than can break down a WEP encryption key at the rate of your browsing, I think it takes about an hour and then someone's in like Flynn. And that's at the hightest wireless B&G connections. I've read that there's supposed to eventually be a wireless "802.11x" which is supposed to have much much better encryption, but I have not seen it advertised or offered anywhere yet.

I'm not and have never been a fan of wireless. If I had it my way I would try to wire my whole house somehow. Since it's not mine I have no choice.

The other pain in the ass is haveing Wireless Access Points and Print servers. They are some touchy fella's that even a power failure will screw up.

To make a point, stay away from wireless unless you have no choice or you just don't give a shit what people see. If you think no one can get in your computer remember \\computername\C$ usually gets you right in and packet sniffers will give someone a hell of alot of information!

Reading

I just finshed Codelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold which is the first book of the Vorkosigan Saga.
Very good book, but the Sci-Fi bits are really secondary to the story.

Right now I'm reading The Lost Fleet Series by John Hemry/Jack Campbell It's sorta Honor Harrington but not really, though Honor Harrington even goes downhill in the later novels.
