Today, March 4th is national Gamemaster day. A totally made up holiday to celebrate Gamemasters everywhere. It seems more to be an excuse to have sales at all the online gaming stores. I took advantage of a few, getting some new D&D books for myself. If you feel the need, all gifts of RPG books will be graciously accepted. Beer is also acceptable.
While driving to Oklahoma this past weekend I started listening to "Dune" on CD. I hadn't read it since high school and I thought it would be a good way to pass the time. My wife isn't really a fan but she sleeps most of the time anyway. I had forgotten how good it is. I only made through the first 4 disks in the car so when we got back home I immediately dug out my old copy and picked up where I had left off. Reading it again it really gets me how f'd up the movies turned out to be. The David Lynch film was so true to the book, with some scenes almost verbatim how Herbet wrote them. Then they had to go and add in all that extraneous crap like "heartplugs" and "weirding modules" and other crap that wasn't in the story. I blame David Lynch. The sci-fi channel mini-series wasn't much better. Somehow they took a great book and managed to make a boring movie . So, read the book it's great, skip the movies, or at least go into them realizing they are kinda crap.
