In the year of 1170, in Bannockburn, a boy child was born.  The

boy dubbed Logie Arrol Fairbairn by his parents, soon differentiated

himself from other children.  He was quiet and reserved.  Logie appeared

to have an innate love for the water, and sometimes stayed underwater so

long before surfacing that his parents thought he had surely drowned.

Logie’s  parents, Evelyn and Christian, thought little of his odd behavior.  They actually thought that they might have been the cause for it.  Shortly before his conception, they attempted to summon a Lesser Demon which they might capture and force to grant them a boon.  Their summons failed, but they did not give up their diabolic activities.  As Logie grew, they began to bring him into the world of Diabolism where he learned many of the rituals and forms.

A sister. Marie,  was born in 1171, and although she displayed none of the unique characteristics that Logie did, she also was taught the ways of diabolism.  Tradgically, it was Marie who, six years later,  was assisting in the rituals when a powerful demon was summoned from Hell.  Logie was outside, trying to hear voices in the rain when he heard his sister screaming.  By the time he arrived back to his house, his family was dead.  All their bodies had been turned inside out and left hanging from the ceiling to drip blood.  Logie himself was largely unmoved by the scene, though many townsfolk were unable to contain their revulsion at the site.

The people of the town assumed that a demon had merely come into the house under the cover of storm and slain the family that lived on the edge of town.  They thought that it was only through Divine intervention that Logie was outside the house, and thus spared the same fate.  The next day the house was burned and Logie began living at the local orphanage.

Except for one incident, Logie spent three largely uneventful years at the orphanage.  One Spring, the local magistrate came to the orphanage to visit.  A show of compassion for the ‘poor, wretched children.’  Logie was one of fifteen children chosen to dine with the Magistrate.  Logie, however, was late to the dinner because busy watching his roommate bear up some of the other orphans that were making fun of Logie.  It was fortunate, however, that he was late.  Merely a month earlier, the Magistrate had had the cook’s brother killed on charges of diabolism.  The cook, as instructed by her demon, was taking revenge by poisoning the dinner.  Logie made it to the dining hall just as the Magistrate fell out of his chair, dead, along with fourteen other orphans, and two administrators.  Logie felt that he was supposed to be at that table, and retained a fear that eventually, he too, would be poisoned.

At the orphanage, he was forced to room with an older boy by the name of Milnan.  Logie and Milnan soon became very good friends, which was fortunate for Logie as Milnan was generally known as a bully.  After three years, Logie was ‘adopted’ from the orphanage by a strange man he had only seen a couple times previously.

The man’s name was Trenabaois, and he lived about a half day’s journay from town.  He had a manor house that sat on the edge of a small lake.  Logie, with Milnan, had been to the lake before, when they had ‘escaped’ from the orphanage.  Although he had felt strangely drawn to the lake, Logie was forbidden to ever return to it, as the townsfolk believed it to be enchanted.  They also gossiped that the ‘crazy old man’ who lived on it, Trenabaois, was himself some kind of wizard.  But since he rarely came to town, and his money was gold, he was let alone.

Trenabaois explained to Logie the nature of his Gift.  That he had the ability to work magic.  Thus began the apprenticeship.  As soon as the apprentice had officially began, Trenabaois allowed Logie to pick his own mage name, and explained why he had to cast off the vulgar, mundane one.  Logie put a great deal of thought into his choice while sitting on the shore of the lake.  He soon heard a voice from the lake whisper a name into his mind, and he then returned to his new master and announced, “I am Phlome!”

Phlome soon discovered that he possessed an innate talent for manipulating the elements.  And it was not long before he surpassed his master in elemental talent.  Trenabaois, it seemed, had a passion for living things, both plant and animal.  Master and apprentice quickly disagreed on the course of study for Phlome.  Trenabaois wanting him to take a course of study similar to his own.  One where Phlome could talk to the plants and animals, and take on their nature at will.  Phlome preferred to persue a path where he  harness the raw power of the elements which he felt all around him.  The more Trenabaois pushed Phlome to study the plants around him, the more Phlome resisted.  After a particularly violent disagreement on Phlome’s study habits, Trenabaois, in a fit of  anger, cast a hex on Phlome which, ironically, forever prevented him from learning the nature of plantlife.  The spell was so powerful as to severely inhibit Phlome casting any spell involving plants.  Although Trenabaois later regretted his rash actions, he was unable to reverse his own spell.

After that, the master/apprentice relationship became more strained.  Phlome continued to focus on his elements, though he did at least learn to cast spells in most of the other forms.  Phlome was disheartened to learn that he had the same difficulty casting Imagonem spells as he did Herbum.  Whether or not he was justified, Phlome blamed this on Trenabaois also.

As the years passed, Trenabaois became more senile and demanding of Phlome.  The old mage refused to leave the manor, and would send Phlome to town on the most trivial of errands.  Phlome enjoyed the opportunity to journey to town, even while he cursed his master for sending him.  For in town, he was able to visit with Milnan, and together they would go to the pub and drink until Milnan got kicked out for being rowdy.  During one of his visits to town, Phlome fell in love.  Stumbling out of the tavern, Phlome caught sight of a maiden in a carriage.  She was the most striking vision of loveliness that he had ever seem and he was instantly overcome with a desire to meet her.  Her carriage, however, went on, and he never saw her again.  He felt immediately drawn to the girl, and believes that he is somehow destined to meet her again.

Phlome inevitably had to face Trenabaois’s wrath for being gone so long when he returned.  It was after such tirades that Phlome would go and swim in the depths of the lake near the house.  He had always been an excellent swimmer, but when in the lake, Phlome felt almost like part of the lake.  He knew the lake had a strong magical aura about it, but that never stopped him from trying to explore its depths, and sometimes sleeping in shallow pools near the shore.  All the time spent in the lake had a subtle effect on Phlome, eventually.  Towards the end of his apprenticeship, Phlome was able to weep raw Aquam Vis.  Upon learning of this, Trenabaois also began spending a lot of time in the lake, an environment with which he was most uncomfortable.

Fifteen years after meeting, the two parted.  One glad to leave, the other, glad to see him go.  Upon leaving, Phlome immediately went to town and found his old friend, Milnan.  He had been recently expelled from the local militia, and was eager to leave town before he got drunk enough to go and try to kill his former captain.  So, Phlome and Milnan began traveling through the countryside looking for a new place to call home.  After nearly a year of roaming, they now find themselves on the steps of a dilapidated covenant with several other mages and companions, wondering what awaits inside.
